What is ADR aware training and who needs it?
ADR Awareness training is a legal requirement for all who have any involvement in the transportation of Dangerous Goods by road. Training is essential for individuals involved in the transportation of dangerous goods and this training ensures that everyone, from drivers to warehouse staff, understands the regulations, risks, and procedures associated with dangerous goods. This applies to not just those doing the actual transport. These include –
- Consignors
- Carriers
- Consignees
- Loaders
- Packers
- Unloaders
- Freight forwarders
- Shipping agency offices
- Drivers (if they do not hold an ADR licence)
It also includes those involved in the preparation and transport of dangerous goods packed as limited quantities.

We only transport LQ, Do i need to be ADR aware?
Yes you do.
If you’re involved in the preparation and transport of dangerous goods packed as limited quantities, you need to be ADR aware trained.
LQ standards for Limited Quantities and many household goods such as paints, aerosols and cleaning products, despite being classified as Dangerous Goods can be transported using the Limited Quantities provisions. These provisions state that certain Dangerous Goods may carry a lower risk to the general public in the event of an incident if they are packaged in a certain way and in smaller containers, hence the term “Limited Quantity”
For something to qualify as LQ it must meet several criteria. Different UN numbers have different limits for LQ with some UN numbers having no LQ limit at all. Under ADR each UN number will have an inner pack size limit which will range from zero (does not qualify for LQ) up to 5 litres for liquids and 5 kg for solids. Anything above these limits cannot possibly be carried as LQ. The inner pack size relates to the size of the individual container the goods are packed in.
The ADR regulations then state these containers need to be double packed for transport. So for aerosols for example the individual canisters must be placed in a box or shrink-wrap tray not exceeding 30kg (20kg if the outer packaging is a shrink wrap tray)
Small load exemptions, do I need to be ADR aware?
Yes you do .
Small load exemptions relate to the total quantity of dangerous goods carried in packages by the “transport unit” (usually the van or lorry, but also any trailer).This exemption relaxes some of the rules, mainly for the haulier, if the amounts carried on-board a vehicle are below the stated limits. It is the transport category (TC) that determines the load limits (thresholds). The transport category for a UN number can be found in Table A in ADR (Chapter 3.2). Anything above the stated thresholds then becomes a full ADR load.
Anyone transporting goods under the small load exemption must also carry one 2 kg dry powder fire extinguisher or equivalent.
