The Continuing Adventures of Harry Spavin

24 February 2017

As some of you are aware; Hazchem Network sponsor Harry Spavin in his water-skiing ambitions, in a very, very modest manner; so are always delighted to hear how he’s doing.

Rob Spavin, M.D. of Hazchem 063 Spavin City Express sent us this update.

After early season training in Florida in April; Harry’s 1st tournament of the year started the season well with good robust scores in 2016.

There was a break in Harrys skiing schedule in early summer as it was ‘A level’ exam time. Harry did very well, getting 3 A levels [at grades B, B, C], despite all the water-skiing that impinges on his academic life.

Following his academic schedule Harry was back on the water in a Slalom event in Wigan, then training for several events –

U21 European Event in Norway [July]

U21 British Nationals [July]

Then Harry packed his bags in August to enrol at Laffayette University in Louisiana to study Civil Engineering as a scholarship student. Whilst in the USA he will compete for Lafayette water-ski team in the prestigious collegiate national championships.

After being in the U.S for only 3 weeks; Harry flew to Japan to compete for team GB in the World University games. The water conditions at the site were very changeable and the skiing was at times in very difficult conditions – causing some upset in the results for some of the top ranked skiers. Harry’s performance was very robust considering he was the youngest skier in the competition

Apart from local events within Louisiana State, Harry is competing in Texas, Arkansas, and California.

However, disaster struck as Harry dislocated his right elbow in a jump practise tournament; leaving him in what turned out to be an expensive Ambulance ride and 4 hours in the local Emergency Room; and no more water skiing for the rest of the 2016 season.

Thankfully Harry has made a good recovery, thanks to extensive physiotherapy, and is back for the new season which kicked on in January 2017.

This year Harry is competing in various events in the US, Ukraine, UK and Europe as well as continuing his academic studies in Louisiana, so we wish him well as a focused and determined young British Athlete.
